Betting and Casino Glossary: 52 Terms Defined

Casino terminology reference guide

This glossary explains 52 terms you will meet in sports betting, casino games, bonus conditions and payment pages. Where BETX's own terms use a term in a specific way, the definition says so, with the rule as published on 4 October 2026.

Sports Betting Terms

The terms below cover the bet types and pricing concepts used on any sportsbook, including the one on BETX.

Basic Betting Concepts

Accumulator - A single bet that links together two or more individual wagers and is dependent on all of those wagers winning together. Also known as a parlay or combo bet, accumulators offer higher potential returns but carry increased risk since all selections must win.

Arbitrage - A betting strategy where you place bets on all possible outcomes of an event across different bookmakers to guarantee a profit regardless of the result. This exploits differences in odds offered by various operators.

Asian Handicap - A form of betting that eliminates the possibility of a draw by giving one team a virtual head start or deficit. Popular in football betting, Asian handicaps level the playing field and often offer better value than traditional markets.

Bankroll - The total amount of money you have set aside specifically for betting and can afford to lose. Sizing each stake as a small share of it (often 1-2%) keeps a normal losing run from emptying it.

Cash Out - A feature that allows you to settle a bet before the event has finished, securing a profit or reducing a loss based on the current status of your wager. In BETX's sports bonus terms, bets that are cashed out do not count towards wagering.

Types of Bets

Each-Way Bet - A two-part wager consisting of equal stakes on a selection to win and to place. Common in horse racing, this bet type provides a return if your selection finishes in the top positions even if it does not win.

In-Play Betting - Also known as live betting, this allows you to place wagers on an event while it is happening. Odds fluctuate in real-time based on the action, offering dynamic betting opportunities throughout the match or game.

Outright Bet - A wager on the overall winner of a competition or tournament rather than individual matches. Examples include betting on the Premier League champion or World Cup winner before the season begins.

Over/Under - A bet on whether a specific statistic will be over or under a number set by the bookmaker. The most common example is betting on total goals scored in a football match being over or under 2.5 goals.

Odds and Value

Decimal Odds - The most common odds format in Europe, showing the total return for every unit staked. For example, odds of 2.50 mean you receive 2.50 units back for every 1 unit wagered, including your original stake.

Fractional Odds - Traditional UK format showing potential profit relative to stake. Odds of 5/1 mean you win 5 units for every 1 unit staked, plus your original stake returned.

Implied Probability - The likelihood of an outcome occurring as suggested by the bookmaker's odds. Understanding implied probability helps identify value bets where you believe the actual chance of winning exceeds what the odds suggest.

Juice - Also called vigorish or vig, this is the commission charged by bookmakers, built into the odds. It represents the bookmaker's profit margin and explains why odds do not perfectly reflect true probabilities.

Casino Game Terminology

Slots, table games and live dealer games each have their own vocabulary. These are the terms that come up most often in game rules and bonus conditions.

Slot Machine Terms

Payline - A line on which a payout will be awarded based on winning combinations. Modern video slots can have anywhere from 1 to over 100 paylines, with some games featuring 243 ways to win or even more.

RTP (Return to Player) - The percentage of all wagered money that a slot machine or casino game pays back to players over a very large number of rounds. For example, a 96% RTP means the game returns 96 for every 100 wagered in the long term; a single session can differ widely from that figure.

Volatility - Also called variance, this describes the risk level of a slot game. High volatility slots pay out less frequently but offer larger wins, while low volatility games provide smaller but more regular payouts. Medium volatility offers a balance between the two.

Wild Symbol - A special symbol that substitutes for other symbols to create winning combinations, similar to a joker in card games. Many modern slots feature expanding wilds, sticky wilds, or walking wilds with enhanced functionality.

Scatter Symbol - A symbol that typically triggers bonus features or free spins regardless of its position on the reels. Unlike regular symbols, scatters usually do not need to appear on a specific payline to activate their feature.

Table Games

House Edge - The mathematical advantage the casino has over players in any given game, expressed as a percentage. For example, European roulette has a house edge of 2.7%, meaning the casino expects to keep 2.7% of all money wagered over time.

Hit - In blackjack, requesting another card from the dealer. Players hit when they want to increase their hand total in pursuit of 21.

Stand - In blackjack, declining additional cards and keeping your current hand total. This decision is based on your cards and the dealer's visible card.

Split - In blackjack, dividing a pair into two separate hands, each with its own bet. This strategic move can maximize winning potential when dealt matching cards.

Double Down - In blackjack, doubling your original bet in exchange for receiving exactly one more card. This aggressive move is typically made when you have a strong hand against a weak dealer card.

Roulette Terminology

Inside Bet - A wager placed on the numbered section of the roulette table layout, covering specific numbers or small groups of numbers. These bets offer higher payouts but lower probability of winning.

Outside Bet - A bet placed on the outer sections of the roulette table, covering larger groups such as red/black, odd/even, or high/low numbers. These bets have lower payouts but higher winning probability.

European Roulette - A roulette variant with 37 pockets numbered 0-36, featuring a single zero. This version offers better odds than American roulette due to the lower house edge.

American Roulette - A roulette version with 38 pockets including both 0 and 00, resulting in a higher house edge of 5.26% compared to the European version's 2.7%.

Bonus and Promotion Terms

Bonus conditions decide whether an offer is worth taking. These are the terms that appear in almost every set of promotion rules.

Bonus Types

Welcome Bonus - A promotional offer for new players making their first deposit, typically matching a percentage of the deposit amount or providing free spins. At BETX it is a 150% match with 30x wagering on the bonus in the casino, and it must be activated before the deposit.

No Deposit Bonus - Free bonus money or spins awarded without requiring a deposit, allowing players to try games risk-free. These bonuses usually have strict wagering requirements and withdrawal limits.

Reload Bonus - A bonus offered to existing players on subsequent deposits after the welcome offer. These promotions help maintain player engagement and reward loyalty.

Cashback - A percentage of losses returned to players over a specific period. For example, 10% cashback on weekly losses means you receive back 10% of your net losses, providing a safety net for unsuccessful sessions.

Wagering Requirements

Wagering Requirement - The number of times you must wager bonus funds before being able to withdraw winnings. A 100 euro bonus with 35x wagering requires 3,500 euros in total bets before withdrawal is permitted. The multiplier may apply to the bonus only or to deposit plus bonus, which roughly doubles the stakes required for the same headline number.

Turnover - Another term for wagering requirement, representing the total amount you need to bet to satisfy bonus conditions. Different games contribute different percentages toward turnover completion.

Game Weighting - The percentage that bets on different games contribute toward wagering requirements. Slots typically contribute 100%, while table games might contribute only 10-20% or be excluded entirely.

Maximum Bet - The highest stake allowed per spin or round while playing with bonus funds. Exceeding this limit can void your bonus and any winnings derived from it.

Payment and Banking Terms

Payment terms describe how money gets in and out of an account, and which limits apply along the way.

Transaction Methods

E-Wallet - Digital payment services like Skrill, Neteller, or PayPal that store funds electronically and facilitate instant online transactions. E-wallets typically offer faster withdrawals than traditional banking methods.

Cryptocurrency - Digital currencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum or Litecoin used for deposits and withdrawals where an operator accepts them. Fees and speed depend on the network and the operator's processing; exchange-rate movements add a risk of their own.

Bank Transfer - Direct transfer of funds from your bank account to the casino or vice versa. While secure, bank transfers are typically slower than alternative methods, taking 3-5 business days.

Instant Banking - Payment methods that allow immediate bank transfers without waiting periods, combining the security of bank payments with the speed of e-wallets.

Processing Terms

Pending Period - The time between requesting a withdrawal and the transaction being processed. During this window, which can range from a few hours to several days, withdrawals can typically be reversed.

KYC (Know Your Customer) - The verification process requiring players to provide identification documents to confirm identity, age and address. BETX's policy makes full KYC mandatory for any withdrawal request and once lifetime deposits exceed EUR 10,000: photo ID, a selfie holding it, and a bank statement or utility bill from the last three months.

Minimum Deposit - The smallest amount you can deposit in one transaction. It varies by payment method and operator; BETX's terms say that if the cashier shows no figure, the minimum is USD 5.

Maximum Withdrawal - The highest amount you can withdraw in a single transaction or a given period. BETX publishes no overall cap, but its terms allow a payment provider's per-transaction limit, in which case the payout is split into instalments.

Responsible Gambling Terms

Responsible gambling tools let you set limits on your own play. Which ones exist depends on the operator and its licence.

Deposit Limit - A self-imposed restriction on the amount you can deposit within a specified timeframe (daily, weekly, or monthly). This tool helps maintain budgetary control and prevents excessive spending.

Session Limit - A time restriction that automatically ends your gaming session after a predetermined duration, helping prevent extended play periods that might lead to fatigue-based poor decisions.

Self-Exclusion - A voluntary block on access to your account for a set period, ranging from weeks to years or permanently. At BETX it lasts at least six months and is requested through customer support; a 7-day cooling-off period is also offered.

Reality Check - Periodic notifications reminding players how long they have been playing and how much they have wagered or lost during a session, promoting awareness and informed decision-making.

Technical and Platform Terms

These terms describe the technology behind online games and the checks operators run in the background.

Random Number Generator (RNG) - Software that produces the random outcomes in digital casino games. Game studios have their RNGs tested by independent laboratories; the certificate belongs to the game, so check which studio made the game you play.

Live Dealer - Real human dealers streaming games in real-time from professional studios, combining the convenience of online play with the authenticity of land-based casinos. Popular live dealer games include blackjack, roulette, baccarat, and game shows.

Mobile Casino - Casino platform optimized for smartphones and tablets, accessible through mobile browsers or dedicated apps. Modern mobile casinos offer nearly identical functionality to desktop versions.

SSL Encryption - Security technology that encrypts data transmitted between your device and the casino server, protecting sensitive information like passwords and financial details from interception.

Geolocation - Technology that verifies a player's physical location to ensure compliance with jurisdictional gambling regulations. Some regions require geolocation checks before allowing real-money play.

Conclusion

Knowing these terms makes it easier to read the part of a casino that matters most: the conditions. Bet types, odds formats, bonus rules and payment limits all use the same vocabulary across operators.

Gambling should stay a form of entertainment. Knowing the responsible gambling tools is as important as knowing the games and bonuses, and our tips page explains how to use them.
